Sandhill Cranes

After the Ytreeide wedding in Chandler, Arizona in early November, we headed for New Mexico to see if we could catch the birds at Bosque del Apache National Refuge.  We were richly rewarded.  That oasis is just south of Socorro.

Several weeks before, my friend Ken Paulson and I went on a photo expedition to the Klamath Basin National Refuge just south of Klamath Falls to see what we could see.  One one day we saw hundreds of Sandhill Cranes feasting on the grain fields purposely planted for birdlife.  The next day Ken and Val saw thousands.

Another photographer friend, Walt Lucas, suggested that we visit this New Mexico refuge after our family event in Arizona.  There were thousands of Sandhill Cranes there.  Perhaps they were the same birds who had migrated south out of our basin.
